Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) represents a significant advancement in the aviation industry's quest for environmental sustainability. As the sector seeks ways to reduce its carbon footprint, SAF emerges as a key element in this transition. Here's an in-depth look at what SAF is, its benefits for the environment, and the innovative mechanism of SAF credits designed to facilitate its use globally.
SAF is a biofuel used to power aircraft, produced from sustainable resources such as waste oils, agricultural residues, or even carbon captured from the air. Unlike conventional jet fuel, which is derived from petroleum, SAF generates significantly lower carbon emissions over its lifecycle. This cleaner alternative is compatible with existing aircraft engines, requiring no modifications to the aircraft or fuel distribution infrastructure.
The primary advantage of SAF for the environment lies in its potential to drastically reduce the aviation sector's carbon emissions. When compared to fossil-based jet fuel, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle, from production to combustion. This reduction is vital for the aviation industry's efforts to combat climate change and move towards more sustainable operations.
Despite its benefits, SAF's availability is currently limited due to production and distribution constraints. To address this challenge, the concept of SAF credits (SAFc) has been introduced. SAFc allow individuals or companies to purchase certificates representing the environmental benefits of SAF. When these credits are bought, the physical SAF is consumed by random aircraft such as airliners, in locations where it is available, substituting for fossil jet fuel. The random aircraft pay the price of fossil fuel, and the person who buys the SAF credits pays the higher price of SAF. Therefore, the climate benefit is then attributed to the purchaser of the credits, who can claim the reduction in CO2 emissions.
This mechanism ensures that the environmental advantages of SAF can be leveraged globally, even in regions where the fuel is not physically available. It offers a cost-effective way to reduce carbon footprints without the need to directly refuel with SAF, extending its reach to flights beyond the current SAF supply network.
Additionally, although SAF is a jet fuel and cannot be used in piston-powered aircraft, the principle of SAF credits, due to its virtual property, can be applied for customers with piston aircraft as well.
At Climate.aero, SAF is an integral component of our Platinum Compensation level. For Platinum members, 8% of their fuel consumption is covered by SAF credits, directly lowering their CO2 footprint. The remaining emissions are compensated for at 300%, reflecting our commitment to not just compensate for fuelburn, but also for non-CO2 climate impact.
This comprehensive approach underscores the aviation industry's potential to embrace more sustainable practices without compromising operational efficiency. By investing in SAF and SAF credits, we take decisive steps towards a greener future, setting a precedent for environmental responsibility in aviation.

Private Aircraft Climate Program
Find your aircraft
Climate.aero is a startup with a clear mission: to lead the general aviation industry towards a greener future by empowering aircraft owners with eco-conscious solutions. Our dedicated team is committed to pioneering innovative services that prioritize environmental sustainability and efficiency. At Climate.aero, we don't just promote eco-friendly practices; we facilitate aircraft owners in adopting them.
Are you a private aircraft owner or operator wondering if Climate.aero is the right fit for you? Our services are tailored specifically for individuals and organizations in the private aviation sector. It's our goal to facilitate aircraft owners and operators with the most advanced tools for becoming climate neutral.
At this moment, we do not offer a service yet for passengers wishing to offset a single flight. However, stay tuned for updates as we continue to expand our offerings to better serve your needs.
If you opt for our 'set and forget' compensation program, we offer three compensation levels: Silver, Gold and Platinum Partner. With this program, you will only be billed for compensation when your aircraft has been flying, eliminating fixed costs. Additionally, we handle all the calculations and procurement of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) credits and voluntary carbon credits on your behalf.
It's worth noting that the cost for compensating is very small compared to the total operation costs of an aircraft, typically representing only a few percent of the total. When you decide to 'start compensating,' you can easily obtain a cost estimation tailored to your particular aircraft and average number of flights per month. This process involves just a few simple steps, and the cost estimation is completely free and non-binding.
For aircraft owners already utilizing a third-party compensation program, we offer the option to publish their compensation amounts for free. If you wish to have these figures accredited by us, a small membership fee is charged.
Using Climate.aero to document CO2 compensation enhances an aircraft's reputation and can increase its resale value. An aircraft with a proven compensation history not only benefits the current owner's reputation but also positively impacts the reputation of any future owner, making it more valuable than a similar aircraft without such a history.
