Carbon offsetting
Prioritizing Emission Reduction
Before delving into the intricacies of carbon offsetting, it's crucial to underscore the significance of exploring opportunities for emission reduction. Reduction constitutes the initial step in any strategy aimed at mitigating climate impact.
Given the limited availability of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and the current restriction of electric flying to short-range flights with sports aircraft, carbon offsetting serves as a pivotal tool in the arsenal of climate action for the private aviation sector. Carbon offsetting enables individuals and organizations to compensate for unavoidable emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases elsewhere.
Carbon offsetting operates within two primary markets: voluntary and mandatory (or compliance).
Voluntary
In the voluntary market, participants choose to offset their carbon footprint voluntarily, often to demonstrate social responsibility or meet sustainability objectives. This market offers flexibility in project selection and contributes to sustainability goals while enhancing corporate image. Climate.aero operates within the voluntary market because we believe in empowering individuals and organizations to proactively address climate change and make a positive impact on the environment.
Mandatory
Conversely, the mandatory market involves participation mandated by government regulations or international agreements. Here, businesses or countries have emission quotas and must buy or sell emission rights to meet obligations, ensuring reductions at a national or international level.
As the market for voluntary carbon credits is not always transparent and may include unscrupulous actors, it is imperative to support only projects endorsed by reputable standards. Climate.aero has chosen only to support projects of VERRA and the Gold Standard.
VERRA (Verified Carbon Standard) and the Gold Standard are internationally recognized certification programs that validate the legitimacy and effectiveness of carbon offset projects. They ensure transparency, credibility, and additionality, thereby safeguarding the integrity of offsetting efforts. By adhering to these rigorous standards, Climate.aero ensures that your offset contributions make a tangible and measurable difference in the global fight against climate change.
While carbon offsetting is a valuable tool for addressing emissions, it's not without its critics. Some argue that offsetting can be seen as a way to simply 'buy' one's way out of reducing emissions directly. There are concerns about the additionality of projects, meaning whether they actually result in emissions reductions that would not have occurred otherwise. Additionally, critics raise issues regarding the permanence and verifiability of offset projects, as well as potential unintended social or environmental consequences in the communities where projects are implemented.
These criticisms highlight the importance of selecting offset projects carefully. At Climate.aero, we recognize this significance and only collaborate with projects certified by the reputable standards VERRA and the Gold Standard, ensuring they adhere to the highest environmental and social integrity standards. Despite these challenges, offsetting remains an important component of the broader climate action toolkit.

Private Aircraft Climate Program
Find your aircraft
Climate.aero is a startup with a clear mission: to lead the general aviation industry towards a greener future by empowering aircraft owners with eco-conscious solutions. Our dedicated team is committed to pioneering innovative services that prioritize environmental sustainability and efficiency. At Climate.aero, we don't just promote eco-friendly practices; we facilitate aircraft owners in adopting them.
Are you a private aircraft owner or operator wondering if Climate.aero is the right fit for you? Our services are tailored specifically for individuals and organizations in the private aviation sector. It's our goal to facilitate aircraft owners and operators with the most advanced tools for becoming climate neutral.
At this moment, we do not offer a service yet for passengers wishing to offset a single flight. However, stay tuned for updates as we continue to expand our offerings to better serve your needs.
If you opt for our 'set and forget' compensation program, we offer three compensation levels: Silver, Gold and Platinum Partner. With this program, you will only be billed for compensation when your aircraft has been flying, eliminating fixed costs. Additionally, we handle all the calculations and procurement of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) credits and voluntary carbon credits on your behalf.
It's worth noting that the cost for compensating is very small compared to the total operation costs of an aircraft, typically representing only a few percent of the total. When you decide to 'start compensating,' you can easily obtain a cost estimation tailored to your particular aircraft and average number of flights per month. This process involves just a few simple steps, and the cost estimation is completely free and non-binding.
For aircraft owners already utilizing a third-party compensation program, we offer the option to publish their compensation amounts for free. If you wish to have these figures accredited by us, a small membership fee is charged.
Using Climate.aero to document CO2 compensation enhances an aircraft's reputation and can increase its resale value. An aircraft with a proven compensation history not only benefits the current owner's reputation but also positively impacts the reputation of any future owner, making it more valuable than a similar aircraft without such a history.
