Regulatory Compliance

At Climate.aero, we're committed to providing comprehensive solutions for both voluntary and compliance markets in aviation. While we currently offer a full-service solution for the voluntary market, our tailored offerings for compliance markets are set to launch in early 2025. Read on to learn more about how our innovative solutions streamline reporting processes for operators across various regions.

Regulations

Corsia and the ETS (Emissions Trading System) compliance market in Europe, UK, Switzerland, and other regions involves regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aviation. Airlines and operators are required to monitor and report their carbon emissions and participate in emissions trading schemes to meet regulatory obligations.

In different regions, there are varying rules, thresholds, and timelines regarding carbon emissions reporting for compliance purposes. Operators must adhere to these specific regulations to ensure compliance with local laws and requirements. Understanding the nuances of reporting obligations in each region is essential for maintaining regulatory compliance and avoiding penalties.

For example under the EU ETS you have obligations unless you are either:

  1. operating only flights of aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of less than 5,700 kg, or
  2. a commercial air transport operator operating less than 243 flights in each of three consecutive four-month periods or your annual fossil emissions are lower than 10,000 t CO2, or
  3. a non-commercial operator with annual fossil emissions lower than 1,000 t CO2

These exemptions highlight the importance of understanding the nuanced criteria for compliance in each region and adapting reporting practices accordingly.

How is Climate.aero going to support this?

Climate.aero is currently developing an automated system tailored for the compliance market. Utilizing our own CO2 estimations, this system will proactively alert you if your operations are likely to fall within the purview of compliance regulations in a specific region. If our analysis indicates that you may be subject to compliance requirements, you will be prompted to upload precise fuel usage data into our system. This data will enable us to provide you with a final assessment of your compliance obligations and supply you with a comprehensive report that can be used to fulfill your reporting obligations. Our goal is to streamline the compliance process and ensure that you have the necessary tools and support to meet regulatory requirements seamlessly.

See if Climate.aero is right for you

If you opt for our 'set and forget' compensation program, we offer three compensation levels: Silver, Gold and Platinum Partner. With this program, you will only be billed for compensation when your aircraft has been flying, eliminating fixed costs. Additionally, we handle all the calculations and procurement of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) credits and voluntary carbon credits on your behalf.

It's worth noting that the cost for compensating is very small compared to the total operation costs of an aircraft, typically representing only a few percent of the total. When you decide to 'start compensating,' you can easily obtain a cost estimation tailored to your particular aircraft and average number of flights per month. This process involves just a few simple steps, and the cost estimation is completely free and non-binding.

For aircraft owners already utilizing a third-party compensation program, we offer the option to publish their compensation amounts for free. If you wish to have these figures accredited by us, a small membership fee is charged.

Using Climate.aero to document CO2 compensation enhances an aircraft's reputation and can increase its resale value. An aircraft with a proven compensation history not only benefits the current owner's reputation but also positively impacts the reputation of any future owner, making it more valuable than a similar aircraft without such a history.
